Hi. I've been kinda lurking on this community for a while, so maybe it's time I say something.

My name is Mike, I'm a senior at a small high school in southeastern Iowa, and I'll be attending Kirkwood this fall. Currently, I'm slotted to get my liberal arts degree and will go on to UIowa to get my degree in English, as well as French and Spanish.

Right now, my friend and I are looking for an apartment. She'll be going to Kirkwood as well. We're having a hard time finding one that will allow us to have our pets (three ferrets and a rat). We'd like to move up around the end of June so that we can get settled in the area and get jobs.

I do have a few questions, if any of you current students can answer them...

- What are the foreign language classes like, especially French?
- How is the GLBT community at Kirkwood? In Cedar Rapids?

Thanks :)

Hi, Holly, nice to meet ya :)

I've been really nervious about moving up there, and going to Kirkwood, being on my own (for the most part), etc., but I'm sure once I get up there and settled in, everything will even out. I didn't get a chance to see all I wanted to when I went up for a TGIF, but I liked what I did see. It's been hard to choose, to spend the money and go to Kirkwood, or to go to the community college down here (Southeastern Community College), and keep living at home.

I've only completed two years of Spanish, but I like a challenge :) If kaneri sees this, I'd really appreciate any input, about French and apartment searching. My friend's sister went up on Friday and looked at some, and, as far as I know, found a decent one near Lindale Mall. I'm not sure how close that is to Kirkwood...

Also, what's the job market like? I would imagine it's decent, with Kirkwood right there, and the students at the TGIF all said that had decent jobs (7 bucks an hour and up), which is promising :)

I will be posting... I'm sure I'll have lots of questions!

I work at Target and its good money, mostly the students are students that attend Kirkwood. I live in the Towers and they just dropped our rental payment things and the towers or the villages offer the biggest package, but aren't the cheapest...The Villages have a gym thing in there get up, but the towers don't, but I believe that each has a washer and dryer, dish washer, microwave, cable and internet hook-up included in the rent, but I think that other places are doing it too. I don't know, you live with three other people, and you have individual leases, so your not responsible if they move out and quit paying rent...

Hi I'm Jen and I won't be at Kirkwood next year because I'm transferring to Iowa State to continue my interior design major but I can give you a bit of advice for attending Kirkwood.

I took Elementary French I with Suzanne Skogland my first semester and she was wonderful. I had never taken French before so I thought the class was challenging but I learned a lot. Also I think she is the only French professor at the college and the classes are fairly small so you should have a great learning atmosphere.

I lived on campus in the College Park apartments and I didn't have a very good experience. They were nice apartments but the other tenants in the building weren't very friendly. But then again I am a very shy person so I didn't meet too many new people. Um, I'm almost positive that all the apartments rented out through Kirkwood are "no pets" but my current roommate (who I went to high school with) is moving into an apartment this fall with her boyfriend and I'm pretty sure they can have pets there. I'll ask her the name of the complex and get back to you. If I haven't gotten back to you in a week then remind me because I am ridiculously absent minded :P

You also mentioned something about Lindale mall. That is about a 20-30 minute drive to Kirkwood on I-380 depending on the traffic.

I have seen some nice ones by Westdale Mall and that is approximately a 5-15 minute drive to Kirkwood.

I had a hard time finding a job last fall but you just have to apply early and at a lot of places. Some good places close to Kirkwood would be: Target, Walmart, Westdale mall, numerous gas stations, or I work at Mercy Hospital in the dietitian's office. They are always looking for new employees to work on tray line or in the cafeteria. Also, I'm sure there are places to work on campus but you'd have to check those out.

I hope that this helps and if you have any more questions let me or pailay know ^_^

Hi!! My name is Sarah. I took an elementary Spanish class this past year and I'd like to tell you that you should NOT take class from Anna Marie de Berry...Holly had her for like a class period and she yelled at her and I don't like her, she doesn't like me but if you must take her class, try to get on her good side, do all of your homework be at EVERY class and you should do fine...

The only experience I have with the GLBT community is through the nightlife here is CR. There are 3 clubs as of now I believe, (one is brand new and I have not been there). One of the bars is one of the best in town in my opinion. It is called the Dragon and has a great crowd/music/dance floor. Everyone there is great! Also, Iowa City (home of the University of Iowa) is 30 minutes south of CR and the GLBT community is much stronger it seems. I hope this helps at all...
